Utilizing Wolbachia Mosquitoes to Combat Dengue Fever Outbreaks
Published on August 28, 2023
by nusamedica

Wolbachia mosquitoes are mosquitoes infected with a bacterium called Wolbachia. Wolbachia plays an important role in fighting infectious diseases such as dengue fever. Some of the main functions of Wolbachia in mosquitoes are as follows:

  1. Inhibition of virus transmission: Wolbachia can inhibit the growth of viruses that cause diseases such as dengue fever (dengue virus) in the mosquito. Wolbachia is competitive with viruses present in mosquitoes, reducing the ability of viruses to multiply and spread to humans when mosquitoes bite.
  2. Increased mosquito resistance to viral infections: Wolbachia helps to increase mosquito resistance to viruses. It can affect the immune system of mosquitoes so that they are more resistant to viral infections, such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya viruses.
  3. Reduces the ability of mosquitoes to transmit diseases: By infecting mosquitoes, Wolbachia can reduce or even prevent them from transmitting disease-causing viruses, such as dengue fever, to humans.
  4. Potential for mosquito population control: Wolbachia also has the potential to control mosquito populations. When mosquitoes carrying Wolbachia are released into the environment, they can compete with uninfected wild mosquitoes, reducing the ability of wild mosquitoes to breed and transmit diseases.

Research and development of Wolbachia technology in mosquitoes is ongoing to help control mosquito-borne infectious diseases, such as dengue fever. This method is expected to be one of the effective strategies to prevent the spread of disease by vectors such as mosquitoes.
